- Jiyugaoka Studio, Ibaraki, June 14th. A very small and cosy club, perfect to start the tour with. A very friendly owner came to welcome us personally and invited us later to his house for dinner.
-Cotton Club, Tokyo, June 16th. How nice to be back here again, it felt almost as my second home in Japan. The very friendly staff was waiting for me in the basement for their typical warm welcome, I had a fantastic time there! Such a nice people! After playing here for many years with different formations it was a real honor for me to play there solo and to see that the second concert was completely full!
-Motion Blue, Yokohama, June 18th. Partner of the Cotton Club in Tokyo, so this couldn’t go wrong, and it didn’t! Based in a very beautiful red brick warehouse, this modern club at the harbour of Yokohama has a stunning view. I met a lot of people that evening, including my most loyal Japanese fan who’s always there on my concerts.
-Lifetime, Shizuoka, June 19th. Shizuoka, a new city to discover, but I didn’t do it by myself. That evening I had the honor to perform in duo with the fantastic trumpet player and singer TOKU! A memorable night!!
-Ai Hall, Itami, June 20th. In this concert hall, again a new venue in Japan for me, close to Osaka, I finished this wonderful tour with an afternoon concert and I can’t wait to come back!
During this tour I had the chance to do lots of interviews, some at the concert venues, some at the headquarters of my record company Universal in Japan. Even a radio host (who has been doing his radio show for more than 40 years!) came over to interview me together with TOKU in Shizuoka.
Thanks to our booking agent Hirofumi Yamazaki (mocloud.com) we met a lot of people to make plans for the future.
Next year, we will be back and it will be a great project, keep on following!

Jef Neve buigt met zijn bovenlijf over de toetsen, alsof die ene noot nog een zacht zetje nodig heeft. Hij is halverwege A Case of You en je kunt een klapstoel horen piepen. De neerslag valt op het dak van het kunstencentrum, de rookmachine puft er een wolkje uit.
Het is het vierde nummer van zijn set in Kaleidoscoop in Mortsel, net onder Antwerpen, en dit is zijn signature song. Hij componeerde klassieke pianoconcerten, soundtracks voor films en tv-series, maakte cd's met zijn jazztrio, ging de wereld rond met de grote jazzsoulzanger José James en is uitgegroeid tot de belangrijkste en bekendste jazz-Belg - de nieuwe Toots Thielemans (mondharmonica) heet Jef Neve en speelt piano.
In A Case of You is hij de machinist van zijn zieltrein. Hij friemelt in zijn innerlijke ballenbak en tovert er een weelderige sound uit van melancholie en hoop, precies zoals hij het graag heeft. Een klein geluid - humanistisch noemt hij dat - met een groot effect, want de hemel mag echt wel openbreken. Neve voelt dat wat hij met het nummer doet, ver afstaat van de tientallen versies van A Case of You, de fameuze ballad van Joni Mitchell over worstelen in de liefde.
De 37-jarige pianist kan er wat van, van grote verbanden leggen, met zwierige sierlinten verpakt. Ook daarin is A Case of You echt Neviaans. Laat hem maar backstage het verhaal vertellen over de La Chapelle Studio in de Belgische Ardennen, waar hij vorig jaar zomer zijn eerste solo-album, Solo, heeft opgenomen. Hij zat er moederziel alleen, zonder pottenkijkers, achter zijn piano. Er zat spanning op de handen, dit was zijn eerste solo-album en nu moest hij laten zien dat hij zich kon meten met A-pianisten als Brad Mehldau, Keith Jarrett of Herbie Hancock. Achter niemand kon hij zich verstoppen, zo in zijn solo-blootje achter de piano, met geluidstechnicus Dieter achter de knoppen.
Halverwege de opnamen liep Dieter opeens weg van zijn apparatuur en kwam hij hoofdschuddend naar de piano toe. Even stoppen nu. Wanneer ging hij nou eens muziek maken, zei hij, in plaats van te imponeren met zijn virtuositeit. Misschien moet je nu A Case of You spelen, nu is het moment daar.
Dieter wist hoe belangrijk het nummer voor Neve is sinds de pianist het tien jaar geleden voor het eerst hoorde bij een bevriende jazz-zangeres, met uitzicht op het strand van Bondi Beach in Australië. Ze zette Mitchells Both Sides Now (2000) op, met die georchestreerde versie van A Case of You, en hij werd gelijk gegrepen door de tekst en muziek. READ MORE at www.volkskrant.nl/
