„Big news! On Monday September 16th, I will perform with my ensemble in this magnificent hall, Bozar in Brussels! Bozar asked me to write some music for the huge organ in this concert hall, so the world creation of my 45 minutes piece for organ, piano, string quintet and brass quintet will be on that evening. I spent 4 months writing on this piece, so I hope you will enjoy this as much as I did writing it! See you there!”
Newcastle aspires to be a global city. And the brilliant duo of Jef Neve and Teus Nobel are set to bring that title to life when they perform a mix of their own lyrical compositions and a selection of jazz standards from, among others, Charlie Parker and Chet Baker.
The performance punctuated with stories, musical challenges and humour. The duo play on Wednesday, June 12, at Adamstown Uniting Church 7.30pm.
Pianist Jef Neve is internationally acclaimed across pop, classical and jazz music. His composition credits include a string of contemporary jazz albums, award-winning movie and TV series, soundtrack orchestrations and a piano concerto. Since the early 2000s Neve has been supporting pop and jazz singers, creating jazz interpretations of songs from The Beatles to Joni Mitchell, nails Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and writes and performs original solo and group contemporary jazz pieces. A relentless composer and performer, he features in dozens of YouTube clips.
Neve first visited Newcastle in 2010 when his trio performed at the Adamstown Uniting Church to a standing ovation. He returned in 2013 for a solo performance on the locally made Stuart and Sons piano. Liters wijn vloeiden in aanloop naar hun samenwerking, zo gaven Jef Neve en Natalia dinsdagavond toe in het theater van de AB. Quod in vino veritas: je was getuige van een waarachtige voorstelling, die beide partijen uit hun comfortzone sleurde, maar hen – in tegenstelling tot ons slipspoor op weg naar huis – nooit roemloos onderuit deed schuiven.
“Vegas in Brussels”, grinnikte Arno naast ons, toen een in strak glitterpakje gehulde Natalia haar lichaam en stem in de strijd gooide tijdens de laatste helft van het concert. Er viel zeker iets te zeggen voor die Vegas-vibe tijdens een funky en soulvol ‘Glamorous’. Maar toch tekenden het orkest (met DJ Grazzhoppa, drums, cello, contrabas, saxofoons en achtergrondzangeressen) en Dame Druyts vaker voor een minder glimziek plaatje.
Vaak bewandelden ze een jazzy pad, maar ook voodooblues (‘I Put a Spell on You’) en modern klassiek passeerden al eens de revue. Het zou zéker geen “Jef Neve goes pop” of “Natalia goes jazz” worden, hadden de twee in een voorafgaand interview nog verzekerd. Helemààl klopte die bewering niet, wanneer een jazzy standard als ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ het beste van beide werelden leek te verenigen. Maar door de bank genomen bewezen Natalia en Neve vooral dat ze zich als getalenteerde allrounders konden profileren.
